These prices assume a full system replacement on a two-storey semi-detached house including all downpipes, brackets and fittings. They do not include scaffolding (add £500 to £1,200) or fascia work.
uPVC Guttering: The Everyday Choice
uPVC is fitted on around 85 percent of UK residential properties. It is cheap, widely available, low-maintenance and available in more profiles and colours than any other material. The trade-off: it is the least durable option per year of use and the least forgiving when joints fail.
The main failure mode of uPVC guttering is not the gutter sections themselves but the joint system. Sections are clipped together with union connectors and rubber gaskets. Over 15 to 25 years, the gaskets degrade, the clips become brittle and the joints begin to leak. On a 30-year-old uPVC system, multiple leaking joints across a gutter run are normal and typically signal that the system has reached end of life rather than that individual repairs are appropriate.
uPVC is also sensitive to extreme temperature. In prolonged cold below minus 10°C (uncommon in most of the UK but not unusual in Scotland and northern England), uPVC joints become rigid and can crack if struck or if gutters fill with ice and expand. In very high summer temperatures, the material expands enough to require expansion joints in long runs — a detail that is often skipped on low-cost installations, causing sections to buckle in hot summers.

Aluminium Guttering: The Premium Residential Choice
Seamless aluminium guttering is roll-formed on-site from a coil of aluminium, producing a continuous length precisely matched to your property with no joints in the gutter run itself (joints only at corners and downpipe connections). This eliminates the primary failure point of uPVC: joint seal degradation.
The practical result: aluminium guttering requires no maintenance other than annual cleaning. No painting, no joint resealing, no bracket clip replacement. Powder-coated in any RAL colour, the finish is factory-applied and typically guaranteed for 15 to 25 years against fading and chalking. Cast in any standard gutter profile.
The cost premium over uPVC is real but needs to be put in context. A uPVC replacement for a semi-detached costs £600 to £1,200 and will likely need replacing in 25 to 35 years, plus annual cleaning. An aluminium replacement costs £1,200 to £2,000, lasts 40 to 50 years with zero maintenance beyond cleaning, and requires no repainting. Over a 50-year horizon, the lifetime cost difference is smaller than the upfront premium suggests.
One practical limitation: seamless aluminium requires a specialist contractor with the roll-forming equipment. Not all guttering companies offer it, and it cannot be bought in sections at a builders merchant for DIY installation. Lead times for the installation can be longer than for uPVC.
Cast Iron Guttering: For Period Properties
Cast iron was the standard UK guttering material until the 1960s and 1970s, when uPVC largely replaced it. Properties built before that date, and in particular Victorian and Edwardian properties, typically have original cast iron systems that are still functional if they have been periodically repainted.
A well-maintained cast iron system lasts 80 to 100 years or more. Individual sections and standard fittings (ogee profile, half-round, moulded hoppers) remain available from UK heritage suppliers and from companies such as Saint-Gobain PAM UK, which supplies cast iron drainage and rainwater goods. Like-for-like section replacement is possible without disturbing the rest of the system.
The maintenance requirement is the reason cast iron fell out of favour: it must be painted inside and outside every 10 to 15 years to prevent rust progression. Unpainted cast iron rusts from the inside, where water sits, before any external deterioration is visible. By the time rust is visible on the outside of a cast iron gutter, the inside may already be significantly degraded. Bituminous paint on the inside, gloss on the outside, is the standard maintenance approach.
For listed buildings or properties in conservation areas where local planning policy requires like-for-like materials, cast iron is often the only acceptable option. For standard residential replacements, the maintenance burden makes it the right choice only where period appearance is a genuine priority.
Gutter Profiles: Half-Round, Square, Ogee and More
Beyond material, the cross-section profile of the gutter affects both appearance and capacity. UK properties use four main profiles:

Profile capacity matters on properties with large roof areas or steep pitches that channel significant rainfall volume into short gutter runs. A standard half-round 112mm gutter handles most residential situations. How to Choose the Right Material for Your Property
The decision comes down to three factors: property age and appearance requirements, budget horizon, and access to specialist contractors.
- New build or standard post-1980 residential: uPVC in the matching profile. No justification for the premium of aluminium or cast iron from a performance or appearance standpoint on a standard property.
- Property where you want zero maintenance for 40 years: Seamless aluminium. The upfront premium pays back in eliminated repainting, joint replacement and premature replacement costs.
- Victorian, Edwardian or listed building: Like-for-like cast iron if you are willing to maintain it. uPVC in matching ogee profile if you want lower ongoing cost and planning permits it.
- Coastal property: Aluminium or uPVC. Steel and cast iron in coastal environments face accelerated corrosion from salt air. Aluminium is inherently corrosion-resistant; galvanised steel is not, despite the coating.
